CHESS TOURNEY STARTS TODAY

The University chess team meets Columbia in the first round of the 25th annual intercollegiate chess tournament at the Princeton Club, New York, today. The match today will have much to do with determining this year's championship, since the University and its opponent have by far the best chances of winning. Columbia, who has either won or drawn for the title for the last six years, has but two veterans, H. E. Leede, who is playing first board for his fourth consecutive year, and E. Korkus, also a veteran of two previous tournaments. On the other hand, in R. Johnson 1L, L. LeFevre '17 and E. T. King '18, the University has the same three men who filled their positions last year. The loss of A. S. Ellenberger '16 at first board should be amply compensated by E. W. Axe ucC, who has shown remarkable ability.

The chances of Princeton and Yale are not so good. The former was defeated by the University 4 to 2 on November 10, and Yale was beaten two weeks later by a 6 1-2 to 3 1-2 score.

Yale plays Princeton today in the other match of the first day of the tournament. In the second round of the tournament tomorrow the University will play Yale, and Columbia will meet Princeton. The University team will meet Princeton and the Columbia and Yale teams will clash in the final round of the tournament on Saturday. The matches will start in the afternoon at 2 o'clock and continue until midnight if necessary on the first two days of the tournament, and the hours of play will be from 9 to 6 the last day. According to the usual custom, the time limit will be 36 moves in the first two hours and 18 moves in any hour thereafter.

The line-up follows:

Harvard: (1) E. W. Axe ucC; (2) R. Johnson 1L, (3) L. LeFevre '17, (4) E. T. King '18.

Yale: (1) H. C. Levinson, (2) R. S. Bartlett, (3) J. C. Kunkel, (4) M. H. Ruby.
