PRESIDENT AND FELLOWS MADE MANY FACULTY APPOINTMENTS

New Instructors and Assistants Appointed.--Sabbaticals Granted.--Gifts Announced.

At the last meeting of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, the following appointments were made:

George Henry Tufts, assistant in English; Richard Stockton Merriam, assistant in Social Ethics; Thomas Henry Clark, assistant in Geology; John Valentine Van Sickle, William Edward Cox, Oscar Baxter Ryder, Norman John Silberling, Carleton Kenneth Lewis, and Zenas Clark Dickinson, assistants in Economics; Fletcher Steele, assistant in Landscape Architecture; William Edward Masterson, assistant in Public Speaking; Carl Eugen Guthe, Jr., as Austin Teaching Fellow in Anthropology; Philip Green Wright, Edmond Earle Lincoln, Frederic Earnest Richter, and Arthur Eli Monroe were made instructors in Economics; William Arthur Berridge, in Mathematics; Howard Rollin Patch and Frederic Schenck, in English; Edward Ballantine, in Music; Bremer Whidden Pond, in Landscape Architecture; Stephen Francis Hamblin, in Horticulture; and Curtis Worth Chenoweth, in Public Speaking. Mortimer Phillips Mason was made a lecturer on Philosophy, Louis Adams Frothingham on State and City Government, and Frederick Law Olmsted on Landscape Architecture. George Falley Ninde and Brackett Kirkwood Thorogood were appointed demonstrators in Engineering Drawing. Frederick Wilkey was re-appointed as manager of the University dining halls, and Charles Jacob Gale as auditor. Henry Herbert Edes was made editor-in-chief of the Quinquennial Catalogue.

The resignation of Benjamin Marston Watson as Instructor in Horticulture was accepted.

The following scholarships were awarded for 1916-17: Edward Dyer Peters, to S. Daniels; Hennen Jennings, to O. A. Knight. A Sabbatical Leave of Absence for the second half of 1916-17 was granted to Professor T. W. Richards. The Hooper Fellowship for 1916-17 was awarded to Professor H. W. Holmes.

The Treasurer announced the receipt of $10,696.66 from the estate of Miss Rebecca W. Brown, to be added to the fund created by her brother, Dr. Buckminster Brown, for the foundation of a Professorship in Orthopedic Surgery. A gift of $2,200 was also reported by the Treasurer, given by the following graduates for improving the soil and for planting shrubs and vines in the Yard: F. L. Ames '54, O. Ames '86, W. C.
