HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Up to the present time ninety-three French Croix de Guerre have been awarded to University men since 1914. Forty-four of these men have had their names inscribed on a parchment to President Lowell from A. P. Andrew '95, as having received their decorations while in the service of the Ambulance. Corps in Europe before the United States entered the war. Lovering Hill '10, a section leader in this service has received four citations for exceptional bravery since he was awarded his Croix de Guerre.
Four men have been decorated with the French Cross of the Legion of Honor. They are: A. P. Andrew '95, Norman Prince '08, R. H. Greeley '01, and R. Norton '92. Norman Prince had received in addition the Croix de Guerre and the Medaille Militaire before his death in France. C. W. Whittlesey '08, and G. Murtry '99, members of the "Lost Batallion" are the two men who have received the highest American honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor. They were decorated on the Boston Common by General Edwards in December.
Of the men who went to Italy to drive ambulances last summer, seventeen received the Italian War Cross and two were decorated with silver medals of Valor.
