Coach Ryan of the Freshman football squad will make his first cut next Tuesday, reducing the number of candidates to 40. Those men who are cut will form the basis for the dormitory teams which will play a short series for the intramural championship. Coach Works will have charge of the Gore Hall squad; Coach Fishback, Standish; and Coach Rich, Smith. As there are always some men who develop later in the season, Coach Ryan and his assistants, Coaches Nelson, Philbin and Rudkin, will watch these teams carefully for promising material.
The first game of the dormitory series is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, between Smith and Gore and the winner will play Standish the following Wednesday. Whichever teams are tied as a result of this game will play on November 2. If that does not decide the series, a final game will be called on November 9.
Intensive instruction in blocking and breaking through marked the Freshmen's last hard practice before the Worcester game. Ends and backs received special drill in breaking through interference and "taking out" men. The scrimmage at the close of the practice clearly showed the progress made along these lines; the play was much harder and more effective than yesterday. Team A, however marched steadily from the middle of the field, where it had been given the ball, to the seconds' goal. No other score was made until Coach Ryan changed the line-ups by substitutions, when Nichols, a third string back, recovered a drop-kick that went awry on Team B's five-yard line and rushed it 40 yards through the entire first team. In two more plays he scored a touchdown
