RINK MEN START WORK IN EARNEST THIS AFTERNOON

University Skaters Had Only One Day of Practice During Recess by Delay in Arena Opening

Full squad practice for both University and the Freshman hockey candidates will commence this afternoon at the new Boston Arena and on the Charles bank rinks. Head Coach William H. Claflin, just returned from a trip south, will direct the University skaters in their initial workout at the Arena between the hours of 5 and 7. The first half of the period will be devoted to the group selected for early practice during vacation, who were limited by delay in the construction of the new ice surface to a single practice session last Thursday on Soldiers Field. This number is made up of former letter men and members of last year's second and Freshman sevens, and will undoubtedly form the basis of the 1921 Crimson septet. From six o'clock till seven chance will be given for all candidates of whatever experience to work out under Coach Claflin, weather conditions being favorable.

Coach L. M. Lombard '17 will assemble Freshman candidates on the Soldiers Field rinks at 2.30 o'clock for their first practice on ice. Drilling at Hemenway Gymnasium under the tutelage of P. E. Wilson '23 has been useful in giving the yearlings a thorough grounding in passing and shooting, and little trouble is expected in whipping a seven into shape in time for the opening game of the Freshman season against Cambridge High on January 8. Following the final selection of the 1924 squad Assistant Coach Wilson will have oversight of group "B" of the Freshman skaters, composed of players not selected for the first team and such members of the class as elect hockey to fill the requirements of the department of physical education.

Play King's College Saturday

Arrangements have been completed, subject to the approval of the Athletic Committee, to state the University hockey season with a contest against King's College on Saturday, January 8. The Candidate are scheduled for a two days' stay in Boston, playing a local aster team, probably the B. A. A. outfit, on January 7, the evening before the set-to with the University. Another tentative date added to the Crimson card is a game with M. I. T. on January 18.

Although only a part of the Arena surface was ready for the official opening last Saturday, no further delay is likely, and regular practice hours have been reserved for the University squad between five and seven o'clock daily, except, Saturdays.
