MR. LINCOLN STEFFENS SPEAKS TO LIBERALS

Discusses Philosophy and Psychology of Russian Revolution--Pictures Lenin as Heart and Soul With the Cause of Liberty

Speaking on the philosophy and psychology as well as the actual workings of the Russian Revolution, Mr. Lincoln Steffens, a former editor of McClures and of the American Magazine, addressed the Student Liberal Club last night.

Mr. Steffens stated that the Revolution was a step into the future, and that, although we might not adopt its principles, there was much that we could learn from it. As an example of this he cited the case of industrial control by the workers. It was tried in Russia, and proven unsuccessful, so that the Communists reverted to strict regulation of industry by those fitted to handle it. We are still experimenting with industrial democracy, he said.

Lenin he described as a man heart and soul with the cause of liberty. he is rigidly honest. Mr. Steffens declared, and is working only for the cause of the freedom of the masses. He admits that his government is neither democratic nor perfect, but it is his assumption that all governments are wanting in many senses, so that the ultimate rule will be by industry, not by governments.
