Elis Have Plentiful Material in All Branches of Game, But Tigers Are Hampered by Small Squad--Yale Has Many Pitchers

Although the small number of candidates for the Princeton baseball team is disappointing, Coach Clark says that "the prospects for a successful season are not nearly as black as they have been in some years past." The number of veterans left from last year's team is small, but the candidates for the team have shown up well, and the team will undoubtedly be as strong as last year. The position which is worrying Coach Clark the most is shortstop, which has been a stumbling block for the team for the last three or four years.

Princeton, like the University, is having trouble with her pitching staff. Margetts, who has been on the team for the last two years, is the only man of first-class caliber who is reporting for practice. Several men have shown rapid improvement, however, and of these Harvey and Jeffries seem at present the most likely men to he retained as first string pitchers. Captain Fisher will again do the catching, and this end of the battery will be well taken care of. Stinson of last year's Freshman team will act as substitute for Captain Fisher.

Only One Outfield Veteran

The outfield situation is very doubtful. McNamara is the only veteran who is still in College, but there is a good-sized outfield squad, and it should not be hard to pick some good men.

The Yale team is fortunate in having a large pitching squad. Besides Coxe and Selleck, who pitched against the University last spring, there is a squad of eight candidates, of whom Cooley and Hartnet are doing the best work. Captain Peters will do the catching for the Blue nine in the big games, but Dann and Ruhm, who were on the yearling team last spring, have been showing up well during Captain Peters' recent illness; and will probably be used in some of the minor games.

Practice games are being held daily in the cage, and the first string infield seems to be fairly well settled. Kernan at first base, Murphy at second, Aldrich at shortstop, and Hickey at third base make a smooth working combination. Warren and Hawks are playing good ball, however, and stand a good chance of replacing some of the other men. The outfield has two veterans for a nucleus, Crane and Parsons, and there are several others out, of who Sloane, Eddy and Hoover seem to be putting up the best fight for third place.
