A portrait at the late Professor Charles Eliot Norton '46, painted by Charles Hopkinson '91, for the Harvard Memorial Society, will be presented to the University by the Society on Thursday afternoon, May 26, at 4.30. The presentation, which will take place in the Faculty Room at University Hall, will be open to the public. Professor George Herbert Palmer '64 will speak.
Professor Norton, who taught at the University from 1863 until 1898, and is remembered as a great interpreter of European culture to the undergraduates of those days, was the first president of the Memorial Society. Professor Palmer was the second. The present president, Professor Chester N. Greenough '98, will make the formal presentation of the portrait, and President Lowell will receive it on behalf of the University.
