STRENGTH IN FIELD EVENTS WINS MEET FOR CALIFORNIA

Hauers Wins in High Hurdles--Brown Second in Hammer--Merchant Individual Star

Scoring heavily in practically every field event on the program for a total of 35 1-2 points and gathering five additional credits in the running events, the University of California track team won Saturday for the second year in succession the intercollegiate championship, rolling up in all 40 1-2 points. The triumph was decisive, Princeton with 31 being the Bears' nearest rival. Leland Stanford won third with 26 1-2, Cornell fourth with 21 1-2, Pennsylvania fifth with 16, and the University sixth with 14. Yale, scoring 8 1-2, was ninth.

The California victory was, to repeat, due primarily to the westerners' remarkable exhibition in the field events, particularly in the shot-put and discus and javelin throws. This strength was in its turn caused in a large measure by the work of Merchant, the individual star of the meet who alone captured 13 points for his team, winning first in the hammer, second in the shot-put, and fourths in the javelin and broad-jump. This is the first time that any man has scored in four events in the Intercollegiates since 1900 when the versatile Kraenzlin of Pennsylvania rolled up 18 points.

In the hammer-throw Merchant's 171 feet 2-inch mark of the preliminaries Friday held as the winning distance and accordingly as the new Intercollegiate record in this event. Captain Brown of the University took second here with a heave of 159 feet six inches.

Merchant's exhibition, though the feature of the day, was not by any means the only exceptional performance. Hartranft of Stanford took firsts in both the discus and shot-put; LeConey of Lafayette raced to victory in the 100 and 220-yard dashes; Shields of Penn State captured first in the mile and third in the 880; Brown of Dartmouth leaped to 6 feet 4 5-8 inches in the high-jump, breaking by 1-8 inch the Intercollegiate record set by Oler of Yale in 1915; Driscoll of Boston College nosed out Stevenson of Princeton by inches in the 440; and Hauers of the University and Higgins of Columbia both came through with unexpected triumphs in the high hurdles and two-mile races respectively. In the century dash LeConey, clocked in 9 7-10 seconds, broke the Intercollegiate record of 9 4-5 seconds. On account of the wind at his back, however, it will exceedingly doubtful if the time will be allowed to stand as a new record.

The University's 14 points came as a result of Hauer's win in the high hurdles, Burke's fourth in the mile, Captain Brown's second in the hammerthrow, and Miller's third in the discus. In the hurdles Hauers, after winning his heat, went through in the finals to a three-yard victory over Massey of Princeton, Thomson of the Orange and Black placing third. Both of these men defeated Hauers in the Tiger-Crimson meet.

In the mile Burke ran an excellent race and crossed the finish tape inside of 4 minutes, 22 seconds, but this only gave him fourth place among the remarkable group of distance men who started.
