SUBSTITUTES UNABLE TO STOP AMHERST ATTACK

Second-String Quintet Allows Visitors to Pile Up 18-8 Lead in First Half--Gordon and Smith Fail to Turn Tide

The injection of Captain Gordon and Smith into the University line-up in the second half did not prevent the Amherst five from defeating the Crimson 27 to 24 Saturday night. It was Harvard's fourth successive defeat.

Coach Wachter started a second string line-up with the intention of giving his regulars a layoff after their strenuous battles with Dartmouth, Pennsylvania, and Yale: The substitutes failed, however, to make an impressive showing. Two goals by Maher gave the Crimson an early lead which was speedily wiped out by a flood of Amherst baskets. The half ended with the visitors ahead 18 to 8.

Between halves Gordon and Smith donned uniforms and took their places in the line-up. Gordon dropped in enough of his customary long shots to cut down the Amherst margin, but the Crimson teamwork still failed to function and the final whistle found another black mark chalked up against the University quintet's record. The all-around play of Maher was the most encouraging feature of his team's dispirited performance. Lamberton excelled for Amherst.

The summary:

Score, Amherst 27, Harvard 24. Goals from the floor, Gordon 3, Merriam 2, Maher 2, Black, Lamberton 5, Nail 4, Kyle 3, Walker. Goals from fouls, Gordon 4, Smith 2, Lamberton. Referee, Mullen.
