"Fate of Freshman Crew Depends Upon Men on Probation", Says Coach Shaw--Henry Advises Rowers to Buy Bicycles

"The success or failure of the Freshman crew-depends upon the men on probation," Coach Shaw said recently. "If these men are not eligible after the April hour examinations, we will not have a chance of defeating Yale in June."

This situation is so critical that Coach Shaw has dispensed with the probation crew of past years and has lined up the Freshmen on the red, white, and blue crews irrespective of their eligibility. Inasmuch as every encouragement is being given these men to study and to get off probation, the April shake-up, caused by men coming off probation, will be eliminated. Men who still remain on probation after the April examinations will be dropped from the squad.

The small number of heavy, inexperienced men who reported for rowing this spring has also disappointed Coach Shaw. The three Freshman crews are very light, and he had hoped to train such inexperienced material to the standard of one of the first three crews.

A new training measure is to be instituted for all candidates, it was learned last night. Captain Henry has advised all rowers to procure bicycles, which are to be used as a means of conveyance to the boat-house and also as a feature of the winter training schedule.
