YALE WINS I. C. 4-A. TITLE FROM PENN BY SINGLE POINT

Yale, Princeton, and Harvard Outscore Pacific Big Three--Crimson Ties With California, Last Year's Victor

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

For three consecutive years the University of California has won the annual track and field championship of the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America. And on Saturday, before the championship races at the 48th annual title meet had been run off in the Stadium, it had seemed highly probable that the huge silver track cup would go West again,--this time with Leland Stanford, another Pacific Coast college.

But when the final results of the meet had been chalked up on the Stadium scoreboard, it registered an uncompromising triumph for the East. Yale had won the meet with 28 points, Pennsylvania was second with 27, and Stanford found itself in third place with 24 1-2 points. Then came Princeton, 23; Southern California, 14; Johns Hopkins, 13 1-2; and, in eighth place, Harvard was tied with the three-year champion, California. Yale, Princeton, and Harvard totaled 64 points for the meet; Stanford, Southern California, and California,--the Yale, Princeton, and Harvard of the West--trailed decidedly with 51 1-2.

East Wins All But Two Events

In individual championships the East asserted itself as well, winning 13 of the 15 events. One of those championships went to Harvard, when Watters, who has yet to be beaten in the half-mile, kept his record clean by defeating Helffrich of Penn State, the defending champion, in a whirlwind 880-yards run. Watters stepped out and led the pack, composed of the ten foremost collegiate halfmilers of the country, from the starting gun to the tape, winning by a full five yards.

In the two-mile run, Harvard came very close to gaining another title. Tibbetts gave Booth of Johns Hopkins, another defending champion, a stiff fight, finishing in second place after a terrific spurt, about six yards behind the winner. The Crimson's remaining four points were contributed by Eastman, who captured fifth place in the shotput with a heave of 46 feet one and three-eighths inches; Greenidge, whose qualifying javelin throw of 178 feet 11 1-2 inches on Friday stood for fourth place in the title competition on Saturday; and Cutcheon, who scored the remaining point by finishing fifth in the mile run.
