UNIVERSITY EIGHT WINS RACE WITH SECOND CREW

SECOND COMBINATION SHIFTED IN RETURN PADDLE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In spite of choppy, waters in the Charles River Basin yesterday afternoon. Coach E. J. Brown '96 raced his first two eights over the Henley distance in what will probably be the last race before the two crews meet M. I. T. on Saturday. The second University eight, in spite of its length and a half lead at the start was unable to keep up with the pace set by the Watts-stroked boat and when the Henley mark was reached, had fallen a full two lengths behind.

Owing to an arm injury, W. T. Emmet '29 was replaced for the afternoon at No. 3 in the first boat by C. N. Comstock '30. Emmet, however, will probably row in his regular position this afternoon.

Turning back upstream, C. McK Norton '29 stroked the second shell while James Lawrence '29 went to Norton's seat at No. 4. After the crew had rowed about 20 strokes further, Lawrence changed places with A. T. Gray '30, who was originally rowing at No. 3. Although Coach Brown made no statement on this change it may mean that Norton will be stroking the boat in the near future.

With the water fairly calm, the first crew, rowing a 32 beat, mude the Harvard bridge in 3 minutes, 56 seconds. The surface of the Basin below the bridge was rather choppy and when the University eight reached the Henley distance in about 7 minutes and 12 seconds Coach Brown stopped the race which he had originally intended to go over the full mile and three quarters course.

The two crews as they raced yesterday follow:

Crew A--Stroke, John Watts '28; 7, Guy Murchie '29; 6, F. A. Clark '29; 5, W. G. Saltonstall '28; 4, C. E. Mason '30; 3, C. N. Comstock '30; 2, A. A. Campbell '30; bow, l. W. Dickey '30; cox., C. H. Pforzheimer '28.

Crew B--Stroke, James Lawrence '29; 7, M. R. Brownell '30; 6, B.J. Barrison '29; 5, J. DeW. Hubbard '29; A, C. McK. Norton '29; 3, A. T. Gray '30; 2, D. S. M. Lanier '28; bow, Amyas Ames '28; cox., R. W. Herr '28.
