Tennis Ranks First as Most Popular 1932 Sport

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

According to statistics released yesterday by the Freshman athletic authorities at Wadsworth House, tennis remains the favorite spring sport of the first year men with almost one third of those taking athletics, 247 men, enrolled in it. This is an increase of 19 over last year, and may be partly due to the fact that there are 868 Freshmen enrolled in the sports program this year against 806 last year.

The popularity of track also is on the upward tread with 148 men reporting, 27 more than last year and has nosed out crew for second place in the favor of the Freshmen.

1932 Prefers Brainwork

Apparently, military and naval pursuits have failed to stir the imagination of the class of 1932 as much as last year's group. Crew and singles, holding third and fourth places, have failed to draw their share of the increase in this year's class but have lost slightly.

The number of hikers has been eat almost in two, helping to prove that the desire of the Freshmen is for games requiring speed and head work instead of merely strength and endurance. This is further evidenced by the increase in such sports as lacrosse, handball, baseball, fencing, and polo as well as tennis and track while hiking, swimming, singles, and crew decreased.

Indoor sports are also drawing a few more men this year than previously with the single exception of swimming. Fencing shows an increase of three men, handball 17, and gymnasium class has increased by eight although participation in the latter activity is not voluntary.

The complete list follows: tennis 247, track 148, crew 135, singles 77, baseball 64, lacrosse 33, handball 33, equitation 21, swimming 25, fencing 20, gymnasium 17, golf 14, hiking 12, polo 8, soccer 7, and specials 7.
