In a dull game featured by some spectacular individual playing, the University basketball team last night defeated Brown by the score of 36 to 24 in Hemenway Gymnasium.
Except for the early minutes, when Robert Brown scored to give the visitors a lead which was, for a while, hotly contested, the game was uninteresting, and the spectators were inclined to be critical.
M. E. Pierce '30, Crimson center, was the first to score for Harvard, and initiated a few minutes of fast play that produced some excellent passwork. Harvard took the lead and held it, 20 to 12, at the half.
In the second half Caulkins, who played at guard and forward for Brown, dribbled the length of the floor to begin the scoring. Aside from his work and that of Snyder, Brown showed little in this period. S. C. Burns ocC, playing at left guard for Harvard, seemed to be charmed, and several times sped almost unmolested the length of the floor. He was successful in scoring this way only once, however.
This was the final home contest of the University team before that with Yale at New Haven on March 8, and was the quintet's ninth victory out of twelve starts this season. The only defeats have been at the hands of Columbia. Holy Cross, and Pennsylvania.
The summary: Score--Harvard 36, Brown 24. Goals--Wenner 2, Pierce, Rauh. Nido 4, Farrell, Rex, Burns, Caulkins 3, Snyder 4, Brown 2, Morey. Fouls--Mahady 2. Wenner Nido, Rex 2, Snyder 2, Morey 2. Referee--Kelleher. Timekeeper--Hislop. Time--two 20-minute periods:
