SYRACUSE WINS ON CRIMSON BONER IN SATURDAY'S GAME

Harvard Bid to Win in Ninth Fails as Two Men Pop-up--Fincke Plays Good Game Behind Plate

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A slight mental slip in the seventh inning of Saturday's baseball game with Syracuse turned out to be the margin of victory that finally gave the visitors a 7 to 6 triumph. After twice coming from behind to tie the score the Crimson committed a boner that would not have affected the score had there been only mediocre opposition but the Orange had been playing the home team on a par throughout and utilized this break to rive itself the game.

Entering the seventh, both teams were tied at six all. Syracuse had one out when Topol popped an infield fly that was easy enough for either Fincke, MacHale, or Wood to get, but the three men pulled the Alphonse and Gaston act and the ball fell between them for a hit. This eventually turned out to be the means whereby the Orange produced the run that gave its slim decision.

See-Saw Game

Except for the foregoing fatal boner the game was one of the better ones that has been played on Soldiers Field this season and certainly one of the more interesting to watch. It was a nip and nick affair that left doubt as to the outcome to the very end. In the last of the ninth Harvard made a bid to snatch the game out of the fire but with the tieing and winning runs on the bases Balsley tightened up and got both Bassett and Des Roches on easy pop-ups. Here the squeeze play might have worked to advantage but Bassett evidently had orders to hit and hit hard.

Fincke, catching for Batchelder, served notice on the veteran that when the latter's finger heals he will have a fight on his hands to win back the receiving job.

Harvard Can Get Revenge

Harvard will get a chance to avenge itself for Saturday's defeat in little less than three weeks when the team journeys to Syracuse to play the Orange on their home diamond.

The only major opponent that Harvard has defeated so far is the Quantico Marines' team. Next Saturday Penn will call for a game, giving Harvard another chance at one of the East's better teams.
