SWIMMING SEASON TO BE OPENED NEXT MONDAY

The second Harvard swimming season in many years will get under way next Monday, October 19, when Coach H. S. Ulen will meet candidates for both University and Freshman teams at 3 o'clock in the Special Exercise Room of the Indoor Athletic Building. All men who are even interested in the sport are urged to be present at this opening meeting. Little actual work will be done Monday, but Coach Ulen will utilize the time to out-line the season, explain strokes, and give the new men an idea of what they are to expect during the year.

Following the method introduced last year, the first four weeks will be used for special body-building work on the gymnasium floor. The workouts will be under the direct supervision of Coach Ulen, N. W. Fradd, director of the Indoor Athletic Building, and his assistants.

Explaining the purpose of the floor work, Ulen said that a swimmer may have very good form but that before the season has progressed very far he often finds that he lacks the stamina to carry on. The body-building exercises serve to strengthen the muscles of the trunk and chest and thus enable the swimmer to develop greater stamina. They also give him a chance to develop the shoulder and hip muscles necessary to the improvement of the arm stroke and the leg drive respectively. Along in February the swimmer finds that as a result of the floor work before entering the water he is not affected by the prolonged effort of the season. The efficacy of the system was proved last year when none of the swimmers broke under the strain of a hard schedule.

With the opening of the pool in the New Indoor Athletic Building last year, Harvard was enabled to have a swimming team for the first time in many years. The season was very successful and a number of letter-men will report back this year. Coach Ulen is expected to comment on prospects for the coming season after the preliminary meeting Monday.

In addition to the candidates for the University and Freshman teams, any men in the University who feel the need for corrective or body-building gymnasium work are invited to attend the workouts
