Today marks Harvard's two hundred and ninety-fifth anniversary. The College was founded by vote of the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on October 28, 1636 and opened in the autumn of 1638. It was not named Harvard until the next spring, when the gift of a library was received from John Harvard.

The Harvard tercentenary will be observed in 1936, at which time it is expected that a more or less elaborate program will be scheduled.
