SCHOOL FOR COXSWAINS WILL OPEN ON MONDAY

Candidates are to Meet in Weld Boat House--Previous Experience is Not Necessary

The annual competition for positions as coxswains of the various crews which will take the water next week will be inaugurated with a meeting on Monday, March 2, at 4 o'clock in the upper floor of Weld boat house.

The school for coxswains, to be under the direction of F. S. Holmes '32, is open to Freshmen and to members of the three upper classes. "One hundred and thirty pounds." Holmes says, "may be taken as the average maximum weight, but there have been 'varsity coxswains of 135 pounds. No experience is needed: only a few preparatory schools have crews, and not all of these send their coxswains to Harvard. As a result very few experienced men report, and so all will be on an equal footing. Each year the supply of coxswains is taxed to the utmost by the demands of the many crews.

"Small men have an opportunity to win class numerals or a major "H" by coxing any of eight crews."
