CREWS MAKE MILE AND A HALF RUN ON RIVER

UNIVERSITY ABOUT 15 DAYS IN ADVANCE OF AVERAGE DATE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Four University, four 150-pound, and four class crews were boated yesterday for the first outdoor work of the 1931 rowing season. Stroked by W. B. Bacon '33, G. J. Cassedy '33, J. E. Lawrence '31, and A. H. Paker, Jr. '32, each of the four University beats negotiated a run of a mile and a half up the river, with Coach Whiteside taking his share in the coxing.

A staff of managers and volunteers made the frigid work-out possible, by speeding up the action of the weather in freeing the Newell dock of a large ice pack. A small boat, rocked on the ice, broke through, and the pack was shoved and floated away.

Tomorrow will see a continuation of the outdoor work, with coaching launches on the river. "We are about ten to 15 days in advance of the average for putting out on the river," Coach Brown commented. "Yale's crews began their workouts on the river last Monday, and the Tech navies took the water last Wednesday. Last year our date was February 24."
