LOCKE RESUMES PLACE AS "A" LEFT HALFBACK

CHOATE AND KELLY TO APPEAR IN STARTING LINEUP SATURDAY

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The return of Fergie Locke to his old position at left half was the only news of interest from Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon when the Varsity was primed for its clash with Yale next Saturday. Locke does not replace Danny Wells as the first-string NO. 3 back, but was used as an understudy.

From all indications at present, the outfit which has worked together on Monday and yesterday will be the coaches' choice for the starting honors against the Blue. Choate and Kelly will have the call at the wing positions, with White and Crocker as possible substitutes. Kopans and Francisco, who have held down their positions rather consistently throughout the season, still hold sway in the tackle niches and work outside of Schumann and Gundlach at the guard berths. Casey dominates the pivot situation and will have as a reserve Johnny Lockwood. With the exception of the return of Locke as an alternate on the first backfield, the secondary remains the same, with Haley at quarter, Wells at left half, Litman at right half, and Dean at fullback. Locke has been shifted back to the running back position after having his fling at the right half post. Wells, however, is practically certain of being called on to start the game. Definite announcement was made that Lane and Cheek will be unable to start against the Eli.

For the second time this week, the victories Freshman eleven put on Yale plays under the direction of Coaches Bill Murray and Cliff Gallagher, for the benefit of the Varsity. The affair was an informal dummy scrimmage and the Varsity coaches supervised the work of the defense. Continuing a scheme instituted last week, Coach Casey sent in four coaches against the Varsity's offense to trim up the assignment work. This method proved satisfactory last week and will probably be used again to put the polish on the first-stringers
