PURPLE AND CRIMSON TO RACE FOUR MILES TODAY

Coach Jaakko Mikkola will send his cross country runners into the first inter-collegiate competition of the season this afternoon when the Varsity and Freshmen meet Holy Cross. Long known for its strong cross country teams. Holy Cross today may quite possibly be upset by a much improved Harvard contingent.

The Freshman race will be run first. Starting at the race track on the road to Brighton the yearlings will cover the distance of approximately two and six tenth miles, finishing at the Newell Boat House on the Boston side of the Charles River. Holy Cross is sending five Freshmen, and nothing is known about their capabilities. Of the Crimson 1941 team R. B. Nichols and C. H. Oldfather are outstanding as demonstrated by their excellent times in the University Handicap Race last Friday.

The Varsity group will start from the Cambridge end of the Anderson Bridge at about four o'clock. They will run over the regular flat course that follows the river down to the Watertown bridge, crosses, and finishes as the Freshman at the Newell Boat House. The Varsity course in all covers a bit over four miles. Last fall W. Sullivan of Holy Cross covered the course in 23.45. Last Friday Captain John W. Erhard '38 turned in the best time of the Handicap race--23.18. Pon Tuttle '40 Friday also under Sullivan's mark with 23.24. And Jaukko predicts that Brayton '39 and Bill Wright '38 will be right up there with these two.

Holy Cross should again have a crack team here today, and win or lose it will undoubtedly be a close race. Both Sullivan and O'Connell of last years team are running with the purple this year
