Three members of the Sophomore Class have been elected as the result of a week's competition to the Social Service Committee of the Phillips Brooks House, according to a report released by Sheldon Ware '38, chairman, yesterday.

Because of the outstanding number of volunteer workers supplied to meet the growing demands of Boston and Cambridge Settlement Houses, Charles L. Burwell '39, Edmond L. Charbonnier '39, and Irving S. Michelman '39 were nominated in the first contest for cabinet positions ever held by the organization.

Usually overburdened with 40 or 50 requests for volunteers, the Phillips Brooks House office has satisfied head workers in slum districts, as energetic candidates brought the total of undergraduates in depressed areas to 209, an all-time high.

Significance of the Social Service Committee's activity which includes, the direction of boys' clubs, athletic teams, and Boy Scouts lies in the fact that it is the only direct and continuous contact of a University department through which the outside can get a good idea of Harvard.
