VARSITY TANKMEN MEET SPRINGFIELD; BASKETBALL TEAM TO PLAY CORNELL

Harry Rawstrom, middle distance express, will be the strong point--and just about the only one of the Springfield tank team that meets the Crimson Varsity here this afternoon at 4:00 o'clock. Highlight of the meet should be the race between Rawstrom and Eric Cutler in the quarter-mile.

The Springfield ace who won the Eastern Intercollegiate invitation 440 last March swims the event consistently around five minutes flat. Cutler was under the five minute mark two years ago, but, since he was injured last year, will demonstrate whether or not he has returned to form this afternoon. In the only quarter he has competed in this year, against Greenwood last week, he triumphed in 5:12.5, pressed only by team-mate Ed Hewitt. A swimmer of vast potentiality, he should do well if his arm doesn't bother him.

Rawstrom was beaten by Willie Kendall in last year's meet, when the Australian set an American record of 4:46.4 in the Gymnasts' 20-yard bath. Springfield's only meet this year was an unimpressive 49-26 win over Connecticut State.

Aside from entering Rawstrom in the furlong and quarter-mile, the Gymnast coach, Charlie Silvia, won't have much to offer the Crimson mermen. Frank Powers ought to keep Rawstrom busy in the 220, while Captain Rusty Greenhood is a sure winner over Bob Monerly and Carlton Condon in the dive.

Coach Hal Ulen's other choices for the hotly contested positions are Jack Waldron for the No. 2 breastroke post and Lonnie Stowell for the 50-yard sprint. Max Kraus will swim the butterfly medley and 200 events while Art Bosworth will take care of the medley and 150 backstroke. Bob White may replace Ed Hewitt as No. 2 440 man. From all indications the meet will be the twenty-seventh straight for the Crimson
