Victory in their final match brought the chess team to the conclusion of their most successful season at the head of the intercollegiate league and in a first place tie in the Metropolitan League.
In the intercollegiate league the team won all its matches; in the Metropolitan, five were won, two lost, and one tied. Playing on the team throughout the year were Kenneth White '39, Morris W. Lister 1G. President John J. Fernsler '40, Edward Lorenz 1G, Reed Dawson '41, and Leonard Nash '39.
The most exciting of the team matches was against the Boylston Chess Club with the first place position in question. In the last game with the score tied, Fernsler, one pawn behind, succeeded in breaking through Lyman undefeated captain of the Boylston team. Fernsler himself was undefeated in collegiate competition and along with White was the most consistent winner.
Plans are now afoot for members of the team to participate in a round-robin intercollegiate tournament to be held during the Easter vacation.
