Kirkland Eight Outstrips Berkeley by Three Lengths for Only House Victory

Beating the highly touted Berkeley crew by a full three lengths, the Kirkland eight turned in the only victory of the four House contests with Yale Saturday afternoon.

The Deacons took an early lead of two lengths and held it with a minimum of effort. Their well balanced crew, repeating its triumph of Wednesday afternoon when it defeated its inter-House rivals, completely outclassed he Elis and increased its lead in the closing yards by another full length.

Kirkland's crew was composed of Larry Butt, stroke; Wally Reed, 7; Fred Armstrong, 6; Sam Goddard, 5; Henry Hoffstot, 4; Lucian Wulsin, 3; Carten Dinwiddie, 2; Dick Brainard, bow; and Jack Reagan, cox.

The Lowell golf and baseball teams has disastrous trips to New Haven, the golfers losing of Berkeley 8 to 1 while Saybrook overcame the nine, 15 to 2. Dave Agnew and Don Peddie won the only point in the golf match on their best ball.

Dick Story, star Bellboy pitcher, insufficiently rested after having pitched in the playoff against Adams Thursday, held the Blue team to four runs until the seventh, but in that inning he weakened and the Elis scored eleven runs in two frames off his deliveries and those of Wally Liverance.

Lowell only got three hits off Johnny Miller, Saybrook pitcher and Yale football star. The Bellboys were not as outclassed as the score would indicate, but they folded up completely in the last two innings.

Winthrop Netmen Lose

Jonathon Edwards overcame the Winthrop tennis team in a close match, 4 to 3, by taking all the first four matches. The Crimson winners were Dan Flickinger, Charley D'Autremont, and Lloyd Booth.

By virtue of their three victories Saturday, Yale will retain the Edward S. Harkness trophy for another year.
