Karl O. H. Lange, research meteorologist at Blue Hill Observatory who taught Geography 10b, a second half year course in aeronautical meteorology, has been held by the F.B.I. as an enemy alien at the East Boston Immigration Station since 1:30 o'clock on the morning of December 8, it was learned this weekend.
In the 11 years since he arrived from Germany, Lange gained fame as the inventor of the "weather balloon" which relays data on the conditions at high altitudes by means of a tiny radio transmitter, canceling the necessity of airplane observation flights.
Course Still Scheduled
Lange's aeronautical meteorology course and his Geography 20f for graduates will still be held unless the F.B.I. interferes, Charles F. Brooks, director of the Blue Hill Observatory, said last night, but he did not have any further information. If Lange is not released, Professor Brooks expected that Geography 10a in elementary meteorology would be repeated in the coming half year.
A native of Wiesbaden, Germany, and graduate of the University of Darmstadt, Lange was married in 1933 to Elizabeth P. Wright of Wellesley Hills, and has been teaching here five years.
