Crimson Nine Defeats Allstars; Crewmen Win Over N.T.S., M.I.T.

Heavies Victorious Only by Decklength

By Edward D. Bodman

Highlighting two sessions of summer crew, three Crimson shells raced down the half-mile course on the Charles yesterday afternoon, Orren Wood's winning neavies crossing the finish line two and a half lengths ahead of the Navy pennant waving optimistically on the bow of the N.T.S. shell.

Bucking a heavy head wind, the winning crew, rowing the course in three minutes and forty-five seconds, nosed out Cunningham's lightweight boat by a deck length in what was probably the most exciting race of the term. With a tail wind favoring the 150-lb. boat, the story might have been different.

M. I. T. Ties Navy

A length and a half behind Cunningham, the second lightweight crew, stroked by Johnny Abbot, tied with M. I. T. for third place in a dead heat. A length behind Abbot and M. I. T., the N.T.S. shell plugged across, out-raced but not disheartened.

Commander Macgowan, who was slated to cox the Navy crew, couldn't be there and the helm was taken by Turner, who had never coxed before, but managed to keep the boat on a straight course and turn in a creditable record. Long on enthusiasm, but short on condition and training, the N.T.S. crew was pretty well done in at the end of the half mile, even though they had been forced to keep the stroke fairly low.
