Council Urges Cut in Athletics To 3 Weekly, Plans Stable WSC

Exemption Requests Flood Dean's Office

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Reduction of the required athletic periods from four to three a week was the recommendation of the Student Council to the Faculty after a meeting last night. Administrative difficulties in handling the numerous requests for exemption were given as the main reason behind the resolution.

Under present rulings, Seniors who are candidates for honors may, upon application to the Dean's office, be excused from two of the periods, and under certain laboratory schedules, other students may also have their requirements cut down. Swamped with over 700 such requests, the Dean's Office is having difficulty in handling the files, the Council reported.

V-1 Requires Four Per Week

Discussing a program such as recommended by the Council, Elliott Perkins, director of the War Service Bureau, reported last night that under an agreement with the Navy, all men in the V-1 program would have to exercise a minimum of four periods each week, and that some arrangement would have to be made for them if the request were acted upon by the Faculty.

The greatest factor behind the proposal was the Council's belief that the applications which were flooding into the Dean's Office were all justified, since most of the students were actually pressed by work, or were hindered by their physical condition from partaking in the full four periods now required.

Summer Program

Under the program which has been in force during the summer all undergraduates, unless specifically excused, have been expected to exercise four times each week. At least two of these periods have been, by requirement, conditioning classes, unless the student participates in House sports, Mil Sci drill, or an organized team sport.

A total of six cuts have been allowed students who are taking the full amount of exercise required, and only three cuts have been allowed to those whose periods have been cut down for any reason whatsoever. Over-cutting of required athletics has been followed by probation.
