Frozen Capillaries Choke Up Circulation, Hygiene Dept.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With temperatures remaining submerged below zero, the Hygiene Department yesterday reported a continuing stream of frostbite cases, with more than 15 men getting treatment before noon. Innumerable students were troubled with stinging care and hands beside those who came to the Department.

Mon with serious cases were urged to report for medical attention by Dr. Andrew Contratto, Medical Adviser at the Hygiene Department. If swelling is very bad or the skin is blistered, prompt care is required, he said, although in less serious cases recovery of the affected part comes in time by itself.

Very similar to burning, frostbite destroys the superficial tissues, he explained. Small capillaries close to the surface become frozen and circulation is impeded, and serious complications may result if bad cases are not attended to.
