WASHINGTON--Opponents of a draft extension beyond the present May 15 expiration hoped tonight to force through an amendment that will keep the act alive but suspend inductions.

This proposal was accepted once tentatively by the House Military Affairs Committee which later reversed itself and sent to the House a nine-month extension with an age limit set at 18 to 30 years.

Chairman Carl Vinson, D., Ga., of the Naval Affairs Committee, said he would offer a proposal to continue the draft until February 15, 1947, but suspend inductions from May 15 to October 15 while the Army and Navy "conducted an intensive voluntary recruitment program."

After October 15, Vinson would give the President authority to call for inductions if the services were unable to meet their requirements.
