Adams Beats Kirkland 6-4; Gains Tourney Finals Today

Gold Coasters to Play Dudley; Timely Hitting Wins Battle As Late Deacon Rally Fails

Adams' baseball nine fought its way into the final round of the intramural tournament Tuesday by defeating Kirkland, 6 to 4, after coming from behind in the late innings of the game.

Four straight singles in the last of the sixth gave the Gold Coasters three runs and what proved to be the margin of victory. Pitcher Frank Holt notched his second straight win of the tournament.

Holt tired in the seventh and final frame, however, as his opponents, trailing 6 to 2, staged a last-minute uprising that came within inches of tieing the score. With two down and mates on second and third, Deacon hurler "Carl" Hubbell sent a looping single over first base to bring in two runs.

At this point, Holt had trouble finding the plate and issued two walks in succession to lead the bases, while the capacity crowd whipped itself into a frenzy on the sidelines. The rally came to an abortive end, however, as Fairfield Coogan rifled a line drive right at the first baseman to conclude the contest.

Kirkland built up a two-run lead in the early innings as the Gold Coasters had trouble touching Hubbell's slow curves and spot pitching, but Adams dented the plate once in the fourth on John Kline's single, and Charlie Farmer put them ahead in the fifth with another single to score two more runs. The score: Innings  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  r  h  0 Kirkland  2  0  0  0  0  0  2  4  8  1 Adams  0  0  0  1  2  3  x  6  8  0

The final round of the tournament will be played at 4 o'clock this afternoon on the Varsity diamond, when Adams will meet the Dudley Commuters, who defeated Dunster Tuesday in the other game of the semi-final round.

Manager Bob Curley may send Marty Greeley to the mound for Dudley after his fine job in relief Tuesday, while Coach Dave O'Mara of the Gold Coasters promises to "come up with a surprise hurler" in the event that Holt is not sufficiently rested to pitch.
