Coat of Fresh Snow In Northern Regions Brightens Ski Hopes

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The two inch quilt of top snow which covered the sitzmark-dotted schuss fields around Cambridge Monday, moved north last night to the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and should provide optimum conditions for any college enthusiasts intending to spend the weekend on skis.

Wild gusts of fine powder buffeted the Harvard Ski hut in Jackson, New Hampshire last night, and seemed to be heading toward Pinkham Notch, according to a late report from the Weather Bureau station of Mt. Washington.

This top-snow, along with the two and a half feet already built up should make wildcat, the Little Head Wall, and the Sherman trail a snow bunnies' delight.

Breakable Crust at Conway

In Conway, Hannes Shneider and company have been losing a lot of good base wax on a breakable crust, hiding 25 to 28 inches of snow, during the past week. Forecasted flurries in the higher elevations should leaven the lumps on the upper part of the trails and the threatened cold wave may pack and settle the lower snow fields by the time the weekend rolls around.

Excellent skiing on Mansfield above 32 inches of snow is luring big crowds to Stowe. Most popular of the local hotels is George Morrel's Lodge, which has had a good chance to show off the new coat of paint which it acquired in the ambitious refurbishing and expending that it underwent this summer. The Nose Dive and X-53 trails are reported in top-notch condition in spite of the large crowds skiing Mansfield these days.
