Crimson Anticipates First Real Test in Clash at Academy

By Robert Carswell

Last week was easy but today the Varsity soccer team is apt to run into more trouble for this afternoon the Crimson booters line up against the Cadets from West Point on the Academy grounds. Traditionally one of the powers in Eastern soccer, the Cadets represent the first real test of the 1947 soccer team which last week crushed Tufts 7 to 0.

Army's veteran soccer coach resigned at the end of last season, but their new mentor, the assistant coach in 1946, is a follower of the traditional West Point principles of emphasizing condition and contact while minimizing tricky maneuvers. Whereas the Cadets generally play a slam-bang, long-passing game, the Crimson emphasizes ball control and short passes between the halfbacks and forwards.

Barring wet weather, the contest may well be decided on the basis of which team forces the other to play its game. A win for the Crimson would place it in strong contention for Eastern Intercollegiate soccer honors; for West Point is a predominantly veteran team which last year rated as second only to Dartmouth in this section of the country.

Coach MacDonald plans to start practically the same lineup which opened against Tufts, the only change being at right inside where Phil Potter will start. Potter, who injured his knee last week, is still not completely recovered but has been cleared by the medical department. The only other injury which may hamper the Varsity is a sprained ankle which starting left inside, Carlos Blanco, received last Saturday. Although he missed practice all week, Blanco left for West Point with the team and doctors thought he would be able to play.

The probable starting lineup for Harvard: Batchelder, g.; Scully, r.f.; Burrowes, l.f.; Louria, r.h.; Ogden, c.h.; r.i.; Heisler, c.f.; Blanco, l.i.; Dawson, l.o.

As a home base attraction, the Crimson Freshman and Jayvee teams will tangle Freshmen and Jayvee teams will tangle at Soldiers Field tomorrow afternoon as neither has a regular game scheduled. Odds are on the Freshmen who edged a pickup Jayvee team a week and a half ago
