What was a jury-rigged home for Pop is school to over 100 youngsters under five years who comprise the two sessions of the University nursery at the corner of Kirkland St. and Kirkland Rd. This week Director Miss Winfred Lydon of Belmont marks her first year of operations in the pair of linked quonset huts which from an appropriate "H" under the University aegis,

Started five years ago as the College's answer to the bumper crop of wartime babies, the Nursery in the finest answer for the vet Ph.D. candidate who would write his thesis without untimely interruption for block building and sundry other distractions of child-rearing.

College Takes Up Margin

The services, inspiration of Mrs. Leon Chaffee, who is the wife of the Cruft Laboratory of Physics director, sets each relieved veteran father back $5 per month. The rest of the cost is financed by the College which also supervise personnel and standards.

All equipment with one exception is scaled down to the proper size for the inhabitants of the Lilliputian world. Chairs, tables, picture heights, and playground slides all conform to the maximum measurements for the various age levels.

Everything is reduced except "Harvey Harvard," a monstrous sized albino rabbit whose extraordinary dimensions frighten all but the hardiest "pupil" who might feel inclined toward biological experiments and reflex testing.

Safely First

Full health precautions begin with a complete medical examination of every child upon arrival. Other safeguards include an electrically heated floor, a special temperature regulator, and scientifically designed toys with all sharp edges removed against possible mayhem.

Emphasis is placed upon integrating the individual child with the entire group and developing healthy attitudes towards differences of races, religion, and sex.

One distinguished visitor at the annual open house last Sunday--one of the few times non-parent adults are admitted--observed: "The Unites Nations could learn a lot out here."
