Parking Plan Approved; Council Donates Funds

The Student Council dug deep into its pocket last night, distributing more than $3,388 at the regular weekly meeting, as other Council action paid off when the Corporation granted a Soldiers Field home for students' cars.

Officials informed the Council that the new parking lot would be ready January 1, complete with watchman and snow-removal equipment, but without University responsibility for damage or theft.

At the rate of $3.50 per month, students can rent car space either by the year or by the month, the only condition being no parking Saturdays during the football season. The fall Saturday rental pays for half the taxes on the lot, it was learned.

Scholarships Given

Phillips Brooks House received the biggest slice of Council coinage as $2,000 was given to the varied functions of the institution.

Notification of scholarship grants are in the mail today, informing 18 undergraduates of a total of $690 distributed among them to meet their term bills. "Scholarships do not exceed $50 and are designed specifically to keep needy students in College," the Council said.

National Student Association came in for two separate donations as the Council voted $600 to the international activities branch headquartered at the University and another $98 for regional dues.

Negro Fund

Of three charities considered, the Council decided to appropriate an as yet undetermined amount to the United Negro College Fund. While voting a token donation to Spanish Refugee Aid--since it is not a student organization--the Council pulled its purse strings shut entirely on a student exchange scholarship fund, feeling it was doing enough international exchange work through its activities in NSA.

The Council also approved distribution of a food poll Thursday noon.

In a last ditch effort to collect the $5,000 of Service Fund pledges still at large, the Student Council will post canvassers in the House dining halls and the Union today through Sunday. University coupon book tickets will be accepted.
