Van Roosen to Lead Swordsmen into Battle In Saturday's Opener

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

After three months of parries and thrusts in the Indoor Athletic Building. Coach Rene Perey's swordsmen prepared to do battle with Amherst in Saturday's opening match by electing Donald C. Van Roosen '45 of Winthrop House and Newton, captain yesterday.

Nine men, three in each of the weapons foil, epee, and saber, will journey to Amherst, while two Freshman teams will take on Exeter the same day.

With only a nucleus of his team experienced, Peroy is gloomy about his prospects for the coming season, which includes tourneys with such formidable opposition as Army, Cornell, and Columbia.

"It's hard to make predictions for this match or any other," he says, "but we're starting from scratch, while every other team seems to have a lot of proven men."

The Varsity lineup: Foils--Barricelli, Edelman, Raney. Van Roosen, Vera. Epee--Duke, Johnson, Masterson. Saber--Edelman, Elis, Toengis.

Freshman foils: First team--Arp, Frankman, Lewontin. Second team--Bruner. Robinson, Shade.
