Defeating Columbia on its home grounds, two members of the Debate Council won a unanimous decision Friday with their arguments on the topic, "Resolved, That the closed shop be abolished."
Harry Eckstein '46 and Howard Swartzman '47 emerged triumphant over a strong Lion team when the three judges, all professors of Economics at Columbia, tipped the scales in their direction.
Pair Enters Speech Meet
The same pair entered an individual extemporaneous speech meet on Saturday with speakers from Princeton, Yale, and West Point also competing. General Maxwell Taylor, commander of the Military Academy, served as a judge in the forensic contest which lasted for several rounds. Eckstein placed fifth in the third round of speeches.
All of the Crimson debates held this term have been on topics dealing with labor problems. The defeat of Columbia brought the debaters their fourth win in six contests thus far this term. Next match scheduled for the council is a debate with Rutgers on Tuesday.
