Drills Under Way For Soccer Team At Soldiers Field

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Ordinarily the turf at Soldiers Field is ploughed by leather-cleated soccer players for only a few months in the fall, but this vernal season finds the Crimson booters getting in some overtime kicking.

From 4 to 5:30 o'clock on the fields which played host to Jayvee and House footballers last fall, the booters, dressed for action, are practicing under the tutelage of Varsity Coach James MacDonald and Freshman mentor "Poley" Guyda. The coaches at present are working mainly on teaching the individual players the finer points of the game, but by next week they hope to start scrimmaging.

Far from being a catch-all spring session the soccer players will probably have unofficial games with the Boston Internationals and other Hub professional teams, including the Watertown outfit. An informal game with Yale, which also has spring soccer, is likewise in the offing.

"We especially need spring work this year," Coach MacDonald commented, "because of the full schedule arranged for next year. It includes Army as the second game on the schedule. It is very difficult to get a team into any kind of shape for tough games early in the season unless you have had plenty of preparatory practice such as this spring's program is giving us."
