Yardling Second Eleven Reorganization Keynotes New Intramural Sports Schedule; Kirkland Defends Crown

Aspiring Yardling footballers will find more room for their efforts on Soldiers Field this fall thanks to the revival of the prewar Freshman Second football team. With a tentative three contests already arranged, Intramural Director Dolph Samborski promised better facilities for the only-average Freshman athlete this fall.

In adition to increased gridiron activity, a full touch football league is planned, while cross country and track events will be also good for the three required credits per week. The status of tennis is still undecided, since the new courts on Soldiers Field are as yet incomplete, but Samborski expressed doubt early this week as to whether the playing surfaces would be ready.

Yard Team in League

Although there will be a Yard team in the House league as last year, Freshmen will probably not be eligible for that squad. Samborski is ready to expand the second football squad to "two or even three teams" if the need should arise.

"We had three teams in a league of their own one year before the war," added Samborski, "and they played a full schedule among themselves." Three tentative contests have been arranged for the Yardling seconds already--with Governor Dummer, Roxbury Latin, and the Huntington School--and more are in prospect.

Soccer Competition

Soccer competition for first-year players will probably be limited to the Freshman squad, although some expansion may be arranged if enough men report for the opening practices. Squash and swimming, offered last fall to ease the pressure of overcrowding, will not be good for credit this fall.

The regular intramural league will be in operation this year with the Kirkland team out to hold onto the crown they gained last November by downing the seven other competitors. Stubborn defense and a tricky T-formation attack helped them crush strong outfits from Loverett and Eliot which held early-season power.
