Winter intramural athletics will be back in full swing next week with all Houses resuming play in basketball, hockey, and squash leagues Director Dolph Samborski announced yesterday. In addition, four more sports will see intramural action before the winter season closes.
Riding the crest of a five-genie winning streak, Winthrop's quintet will seek to preserve its margin in the House court loop when play picks up a week from tomorrow. "There will be plenty of hot basketball before the end of the season in March," Samborski predicted, with Dunster, Eliot, and Dudley all sporting top squads.
Intramural basketball competition will extend to the Yard next Monday, when 16 teams open their newly formed league. Each dormitory will play twice weekly.
Entered are three quintets from Thayer, two from Matthews and Weld, and one apiece from Dudley, Holworthy, Lionel, Massachusetts, Mower, Stoughton Strauss, and Wigglesworth. Action will be divided into two eight-team sections, with playoffs at the close of the campaign.
On other fronts, House hockey resumes play tomorrow, with squash starting up again next week. Ice leaders are Eliot and Winthrop with 2 and 0 records, while Lowell and Winthrop are currently pacing the racquets loop.
Besides the three major intramural sports, aspiring House athletes with also get chances in swimming, and volleyball leagues, with pool activity starting February 12.
