Art Valpey Arrives in Cambridge, Slates First Workout on March 15

New Coach Confirms Columbia as Opener

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Arthur L. Valpey yesterday afternoon took over the small Blockhouse office that has R. C. Harlow panted on the door and a couple of hours later announced that Crimson spring football practice will start on the afternoon of March 15.

Arriving in Cambridge after a three-day automobile journey from Ann Arbor, the youthful-looking Crimson head football coach thought his biggest problem would be "that of organization." "Ordinarily I'm not particularly interested in having Varsity players out for spring practice," he told a hastily called press conference, "but this year we have too much ground to cover."

Valpey confirmed reports that he would install a quasi-Michigan system, but the student on the street will have to wait till October 2, 1948 to view the spinning fullback and the two platoon system, Harvard style. "There will be no games and no outside scrimmages before Columbia," the new coach explained.

No End Coach Yet

Although he has not yet signed an end coach, and has "no leading candidate" for the job, Valpey expected to fill the position in the next few weeks. Assistants Butch Jordan and Davy Nelson, line and backfield coaches, will arrive in town the end of next week.

Viewing last season's movies, finding a house, and meeting candidates for the football squad are Valpey's main plan for next week. "I will call a closed meeting for football players next Friday evening for football players next Friday evening in the Varsity Club," he added, "and, as for as I'm concerned, everyone is starting off on equal terms."

Two weeks of indoor sessions and four on the outside are Valpey's plans for getting to know his personnel.
