'52 Tennis Team Takes 5-3 Win in Deerfield Match

Playing its closest match of the season so far, the freshman tennis team yesterday downed Deerfield Academy's varsity 5 to 3. The match was played at Deerfield.

Only eight individual matches were played because of the time it took for the singles. The number one doubles match was called at 5-5 in the third set on Account of darkness.

Doubles Decide

The singles were split evenly between the two teams, leaving Dave Aldrich and Peter Blen, and Roger Swanson and Dick Becker, playing numbers two and three doubles, to clinch the match. Both doubles teams won 6-4, 6-4.

Gerry Murphy, Dave Aldrich, and Roger Swanson were the freshmen to win in the singles. Playing in the number two, three, and six positions, they all won in straight sets. Don Blackmer, Charlie Thompson, and Jack Faircloth were the only losers of the afternoon.

Meet Amherst Today

This afternoon the freshmen play Amherst's freshmen, also away. Because Deerfield and Amherst are only eleven miles apart, the team spent last night at Amherst.

The Amherst coach said last night that his number one man is comparable to the School's number one varsity player, giving an idea of the competition the Crimson squad will face.

He admitted that the rest of his team was below this standard, however. This afternoon's match will be the first of the season for the Amherst freshmen.
