HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Members of the Harvard chapter of the American Veterans Committee will vote tonight on the establishment of a fellowship fund to aid Asiatic students studying at the College. They meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Law School's Kendall House.
Money for the proposed fellowship would come from the Evans Carlson Memorial Fund established by the AVC in 1947. The $850 now in the fund was earned when the Chapter sponsored a talk by Henry A. Wallace in October, 1947. Although they did not know exactly what the fund would be used for at that time, the members tried to increase it but were unable to get more speakers.
Executive Proposal
Last week the AVC executive board decided to recommend that the fund, which now rests in a Washington bank, be used "to assist in the support of one or more Asiatic student whose studies at Harvard are intended as preparation for future constructive service in the regeneration of Asia." If the motion is approved by the members the money will be given next year to one or two Asiatic students who need it.
The fund was established as a memorial to General Evans Carlson who led "Carlson's Raiders" in Asiatic combat during the war.
Officers for next year will also be elected at tonight's open meeting.
