N. W. Shepard Named as New Court Mentor

Successor to Barclay Comes Here from Davidson, Where He Made Impressive Record

Norman W. Shepard, athletic director and basketball coach at Davidson College since 1936, will succeed Bill Barclay as Harvard court mentor, the H.A.A. announced last night.

Since the war, Shepard's teams have won 55 games and lost 22 in the fast Southern Conference. The small North Carolina school has only 900 men on which to draw.

Last season, Davidson led the nation in two departments--percentage of foul throws made, and lowest number of fouls committed. The 47-year-old Shepard was graduated from North Carolina in 1923, after transferring from Davidson in his junior year.

The season following graduation, Shepard coached the team-of-the-year, the 1924 North Carolina five, the only Tarheel quintet in history to go through a season undefeated.

"Talent is Made, Not Born"

Shepard has had a long career as player, coach, administrator, and business-man. He uses the fast-break and is noted for developing talent. Three of the first six men on the Davidson squad last season didn't make their high school teams.

Shepard also coached a Chinese entry in the Far Eastern Olympics, and the Guilford and Randolph-Macon College teams. Last year he was a member of the U. S. Basketball Committee for the Olympics. During the summer he scouts for the Cincinnati Reds.
