Freshman Crew Opens on Charles Against MIT, BU

Harvey Love's freshman crew opens its season at 4:30 p.m. today against Boston University and MIT over a mile and three-quarters upstream course on the Charles. The present first boat has rowed together as a unit for only four days, but it "has what it takes to win", according to Love.

The BU freshmen have a strong crew, undefeated on its Southern vacation trip. "They have a giant for a stroke," Love continued, "and BU is very proud of its performance." Little is known of the MIT eight, which also races for the first time today.

Good Time Trials

Although Love would not disclose the times of his first boat, he stated that the time trials were "satisfactory." The first boat held its own all the way in a race with the varsity, and were not over-awed. "Such a showing against the varsity proves that they will be tough against any freshman crew," Love added.

Love did not decide upon the first boating until last Tuesday, when he shifted Joff Wyman from the first seat in the second crew up to number five in the first boat. Previously he had taken Phil Dullois from the second-boat six oar and put him at two in his first eight.

The remaining seats in the first boat are filled by the same men that Love selected during the spring vacation practices. Frank Huntington strokes, Cal Dickens rows seven, and Lee Rouner, brother of the junior varsity's Art, rows six, Link Boyden is in the four seat, John Atherton at three, and Dan Simonds at bow. Hugh McCauley has won the competition for first-boat cox.

"It is impossible to compare this year's crew to last year's champion freshman first boat," stated Love. He went on to explain that because the crews got on the river so many days later this season than last, the time trials have not been comparable. "It looks as if they might be better than some of the undefeated crews I've had in the past though," commented Love.

Fast Second Boat

In Love's opinion the freshman second boat could be a pretty good first boat if it were not in competition with the present first boat. It is more the psychological disadvantage of being named second boat than its physical shortcomings that makes the difference, the coach feels.

The Crimson eight rows in lane 4 this afternoon, nearest the Boston side. BU, the host, is in lane 2, and MIT in lane 3.
