Henry Lamar put the freshmen football team through it first real scrimmage of the year yesterday. Dividing the big squad into five elevens, he kept up the contact work for almost an hour.
Lamar would not single out any individual for praise or condemnation, although he said the squad as a whole showed good spirit.
"What we wanted to find out today," he said, "was who can hit. We want to know who wants to play football." Lamar admitted he had seen "some hard tackling," but said the freshmen needed, and would get, more scrimmages.
The five teams that were set up yesterday were not anything like permanent assignments, according to Lamar.
"We are still trying to analyze the squad," he said. The freshmen have been practicing less than a week.
For the first time punting occupied a place in the workouts. The Yardlings practiced kicking and receiving, first in dead scrimmage, them with tacking.
Lamar also ordered intensive blocking drills for the linemen and some passing for the backs and ends.
