NBC 'Optimistic," Law Group Hears

Members of the New Boston Committee are "quite optimistic" about electing a majority of their candidates to the 9-man City Council, James F. Ryan 3L told a meeting of the Law School's Democratic Club yesterday in a talk on "Boston Machine Politics."

"It's going to be a dirty campaign, though," he warned. He added that some of the Boston Committee's opponents had already labeled the organization a "Red Republican Front," and had called Jerome D. Rappaport '45, the Committee's founder, a Communist. Ryan is co-chairman of the Young Citizens group, which is now affiliated with the Boston Committee.

The Committee was formed, Ryan said, to help the voters make "wise choices" in this year's City Council and School Committee elections. It will "guide those who don't know what everyone should know about the candidates." He added that the Boston Committee's choices were made on the basis of questionnaires sent to the candidates, and that members of the Committee had made an extensive study of their records before giving them an endorsement.
