Cambridge Jails 'College Burglar' Caught in Gotham

Accused of at least 165 burglaries in Harvard halls and surrounding parts of Cambridge, James McLeod, 28, a former convict, was returned from New York to the East Cambridge jail this week.

Police charge that McLeod would collect a stock of small items in various thefts and then transport the lot to New York in a car where it was liquidated by pawning. About $1,000 of an estimated $20,000 loot has been recovered.

McLeod was arrested in Times Square last Monday by New York police acting on a Massachusetts alarm. He did not fight extradition. Said to be a former resident of the South End, McLeod's police record goes back nine years.

Police believe that McLeod worked with Joseph W. Duane, 32, of the West End, who was arrested in the Yard last week on a similar charge. Duane is said to have taken in $20,000 from 117 burglaries in the Harvard area.
