AFL Head Denies Rumors of Coup In HUERA Strife

The president of AFL's local 254 yesterday denied rumors that his union is preparing a coup to wrest the support of University maids and janitors from the HUERA to the AFL.

Edward T. Sullivan, president of the Building Service Employees International, said, "We wouldn't try to undermine any union. In the past, our attempts to organize have been right out in the open."

Several janitors employed by the University had charged the AFL with engineering a future HUERA meeting, which was agreed to by Daniel Mulvihill, president of the HUERA, and a group of employees. The meeting is scheduled for Monday night, November 3.

AFL Plot?

A group of janitors petitioned Mulvihill for the meeting, asking the HUERA head to present a full audit of the union's finances. When the pro-Mulvihill faction among the janitors heard of the petition, they called it an AFL plot to destroy the HUERA.

Sullivan tried to organize the maids and janitors last fall, but only a small percentage were willing to desert the HUERA. Sullivan attributed this mainly to the HUERA's exceptionally low dues of 50 cents per month; the AFL charges $2 per month.
